Construction of Building 1917

These pictures show the construction of the Georgian Revival-style building that served as Commerce Post Office from 1918-1972 and that presently houses the Commerce Public Library.

Digging the foundation. Work began on July 2, 1917 and the building was ready for occupancy on August 15, 1918.

The foundation and exterior walls are of brick.

It is a semi-fire proof building of the third class, approximately 55x70 feet.

Back of the building before the loading dock was added at a later time. This is the current parking lot behind the building.

The exterior ornamentation is made of cypress wood. The building has a ballasted composition roof with a tin roof on the second and clear story portions. The roof terrace is enclosed with parapet walls and balustrade panels.

The front portico is of a modified Tuscan order.

The building was completed at a cost of $45,000+Equipment and fixtures=$6,000. The supervising Architect's Office, Washington, DC. was the architect. It is a standardized building, one of a group of 8 contracted in 1917-18.

There is a partial second story in the rear of this clear story part of the building. The upper windows are now obscured by a dropped ceiling.
