About Commerce Public Library

A place to learn, connect, create, and belong.

Commerce Public Library is a nonprofit public library serving Commerce, Hunt County, and the surrounding area.

Located in the heart of downtown Commerce, the library provides free access to books and information, technology, educational opportunities, community resources, programs, and spaces where people of all ages can learn and connect.

Today’s Commerce Public Library is about much more than books. Our community comes here to use computers and Wi-Fi, attend programs, prepare for the GED, learn English, develop computer and financial skills, explore our Makerspace, research local history, study, meet, create, and spend time together.

We strive to make the library a welcoming and accessible resource for everyone in our community.

A Community-Supported Nonprofit Library

Commerce Public Library has a unique history and operating model. The library is operated by the Friends of the Commerce Public Library, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, rather than as a traditional city department.

The City of Commerce is an important partner in the library's work, providing our historic building and public support, while grants, donations, community partnerships, and other sources help make our collections, programs, technology, and services possible.

This partnership between the library, the City, and the community has helped Commerce maintain a public library for generations.

Our Historic Home

Commerce Public Library is located at 1210 Park Street in the historic former Commerce Post Office.

Construction of the building began in 1917 and was completed in 1918. It served as Commerce's main post office until 1971 before becoming the home of Commerce Public Library in 1973. The Georgian Revival building was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1991.

Today, we are proud to preserve this important piece of Commerce history while continuing to adapt the building to meet the needs of today's community.

Preserving Our Community's Story

The library maintains a growing Local History and Genealogy Collection preserving photographs, documents, books, newspapers, memorabilia, and other materials related to Commerce and the surrounding area.

Our goal is not only to preserve these materials, but to make the history of our community increasingly accessible to researchers, families, students, and future generations.

More Than a Library

Our work centers on lifelong learning and access. Through our collections, digital resources, technology, adult literacy programs, children's and teen programming, Makerspace, community partnerships, and public spaces, we work to respond to the changing needs of Commerce.

A strong library takes all of us, and we are grateful for the patrons, volunteers, donors, community organizations, businesses, City partners, and Friends who continue to make Commerce Public Library possible.
